An official Spotify Android app is in the works, and the music streaming service has just demoed it for the first time. Read on for the video, but be sure to bring a shovel. You’ll need it to scoop your jaw off the floor!
We’ve known Spotify has been working on mobile apps for a while now, but we thought the first one we’d be seeing would be Spotify for iPhone. Out of the blocks first though is the official Spotify Android app, demoed for the first time at Google’s I/O event in San Francisco yesterday.
You can see the Spotify Android app running in the video below. It’s still a work in progress but Spotify already seems to have nailed the UI, with big friendly album covers, and the features. The Spotify Android app will work over 3G, but it’ll also cache songs you request so you can listen when you’re out of signal too.
Best of all, the Spotify Android app works with the Spotify desktop client, letting you drag and drop tracks for preloading. We’ll be getting more details on the Spotify Android app and other versions for mobile in “the coming weeks and months” according to Spotify, so stay tuned and enjoy the video.

I suppose it is *not impossible* that Apple might be a bit fidgety about letting Spotify on the iPhone, what with iTunes and everything.
Might be one reason for seeing the Android version first – I would expect the iPhone version to be stuck in App Store approvals hell for a while yet.
I saw 3G as being the stickler after the whole Sling escapade, but you make a good point about iTunes. On the desktop, their GUIs are disturbingly similar. If that’s the case, Spotify could do well to delay an iPhone version until after it rolls out on computers in the US, so that they can pull more public opinion in their favour when it comes to the arbitrary app approval process.
