Sony Ericsson has shushed the gossip mongers and confirmed that the company is indeed working on an Android phone. The unnamed device is set to run Android 2.0 and will be out in the ‘near future’.
Sony Ericsson has been dodging rumours about a possible Android phone for months, but has never said more than that it was looking closely at the open source OS. A recent DigiTimes article claimed that a ‘droid was being lined up for the end of the year and it looks like DigiTimes may have been on the money.
Sony Ericsson’s VP of marketing for Asia Pacific, Peter Ang, announced that the company was developing a new handset that will run Android 2.0 and will be available “in the near future.” Ang also said that the phone would have a “unique style”by which we think he means a new GUI.
When pressed on style issue, Ang held up the Xperia X1 as an example of how Sony Ericsson has taken an existing OS (Windows Mobile, in this case) and given it a unique spin.
