Psystar Open MacPsystar, the Mac clone machine seller, has just filed for bankruptcy, but this looks to be only the beginning of a nasty dispute: the US company will now have to reveal its financial backers next month. Could a big PC maker be behind it?

Given Apple’s deep pockets an army of lawyers, it’s impressive that Psystar, which sells computers with Mac OS X installed in violation of Apple’s terms, has lasted so long. No more though: Psystar has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Florida. If you were hoping for that white box Mac OS X netbook, you might have to import from Russia now instead.

The filing should delay Apple’s case against Psystar for a while, but things could be about to get more interesting: Psystar will now have to reveal its investors to a court on 5 June.

If you’ve found it a bit suspicious that a small company could carry on selling own brand Macs in defiance of a multi-national giant, you could be about to find out why. Apple appears to think that Psystar has some powerful financial backers, which is why it’s pulled out the big guns. Who are these shady money men? We’ll have to wait and see if a direct rival to Apple has been behind it all – but not long.
