NEC Versa Pro J: skinnier than an Eee PC SeashellNEC just slipped out the NEC Versa Pro J UltraLite Type VS, a new netbook that trounces the Eee PC Seashell in the size zero stakes: it’s just 15mm thick all the way through!

Thin’n'lite netbooks are where the competition is at these days, and NEC is the latest contender with the NEC Versa Pro J, an ultra portable laptop as thin as a MacBook Air all the way through and can slip into an envelope much smaller.

While the NEC Versa Pro J netbook doesn’t have the same tapered edges as the Seashell, it’s certainly better looking than NEC’s recent Quasimodo of an all in one desktop, the Valuestar W.

Specs wise, the NEC Versa Pro J manages to fit inside a 64GB SSD and Atom Z540 1.84GHz processor and a good ol’ laptop nipple instead of a trackpad. While the NEC Versa Pro J has to run unruly Windows Vista, it weighs in at just 725g, so it’s a price we’re willing to pay.

Sadly, the NEC Versa Pro J netbook is Japan only at the moment, but it’s an impressive display of what’s possible right now. Let’s hope we get a few imitators over here soon.

This looks very promising, but I think I’ll wait until we have a confirmed price before I get too excited. I get the distinct feeling that manufacturers are beginning to realise that their initial pricing of netbooks was a bit too competitive for their own good!
