sony_ericsson_facial_expression_pmp_cellphone_patentSony Ericsson has come up with an interesting twist on the ‘Genius’ style playlist generator. Rather than just working out music you might like in general, it tries to work out if you are happy or sad and cues up some appropriate tunes.

Sony Ericsson can’t seem to get its act together regarding the PlayStation phone, but that doesn’t mean the SE engineers are just twiddling their thumbs. Sony Ericsson boffins have patented a technique – “Generating music playlist based on facial expression” – for using your phone’s camera to read your facial expression and work out your current mood.

By looking for specific facial features (Smiles? Smeared mascara?) or comparing your face with presets for different moods the system will have a stab at how you are feeling and this info can be used to knock up a custom playlist. Sony Ericsson reckon they could spot happiness, sadness, surprise, anger, fear, disgust, neutrality, etc.

We have no idea what music it will play if you are afraid or disgusted. Come to think of it, we can’t decide how this ought to work. Should you get happy music if your phone thiks you are depressed or should sad expressions get you a dose of Leonard Cohen?
