Cool-er eBook hands-on!

Remember the Cool-er eBook we saw last week? We’ve got one of our very own to squeeze an entire library in our pocket. Come and see if this UK bound eBook is a Kindle killer in our gallery!

At a glance of the spec sheet you wouldn’t think the Cool-er stands out from the eBook crowd. No 3G, no Wi-Fi, no touchscreen, and 1GB of storage. But the Cool-er still manages to tick an awful lot of boxes. It’s cheap for an eBook (£189), works with PC and Macs (Yes, we mean you Sony Reader), it’s phenomenally light, and crucially, you can pre-order yours in the UK right this second. You can’t say that about the Kindle.

Cool-er eBook comes in iPod colours

From our quick browse, there are enough options to keep most bookworms happy, with font and size changes accounted for, and even a landscape mode on the Cool-er eBook. But we’re bowled over by how light it is: at 181g, it’s even easier to hold than a paperback, though will take some getting used to.

File format wise, the Cool-er eBook supports, PDFs, EPUBs, .TXTs and JPEG files and you can stock up on more eBooks at its bookshop, Coolerbooks.com, even if you own a different device. The Cool-er will come to rip up paperbacks in Blighty at the end of the month: creator Interead says it’s in talks with a big supermarket chain to stock the Cool-er eBook, so don’t be surprised to see it on a shelf near you soon! We’re off for a read, and we’ll be back with first impressions next week.
