An Apple tablet won’t appear until next year, an analyst predicts. If you were hoping for a holy trinity of a new iPhone, MacBook 3G and Apple tablet at WWDC next month, you could be in for a let down.
While rumours haven’t been gathering for an Apple tablet at quite the same rate as a new iPhone, it’s possible there’s something in them: we’ve seen patents for an Apple tablet, CEO Tim Cook’s veiled references to one, and a strange bump in OS X battery life on portable devices with the latest update. Now though, an analysts says not to get our hopes up just yet: an Apple tablet won’t be out until 2010, he reckons.
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says that a new OS would have to be developed for the Apple tablet: something more powerful than iPhone OS 3.0 but still touchscreen based, and that would take time.
“We expect the development of such an OS to be underway currently, but its complexity, along with our conversations with a key company in the mobile space, leads us to believe it will not launch until CY10,” he said.
Oh well. It is only a guestimate of course, but at least Apple will have time to perfect it if it waits until then for an Apple tablet.
