Zeemote JS1 mobile game controller first play

The Zeemote JS1 Bluetooth game controller for mobiles has arrived in the UK at long last: it’s being bundled out with the Sony Ericsson W705 on T-Mobile from next week. Yes, it looks like a wee little Wiimote, but how does it play?

The technology powering the Zeemote JS1 itself is nothing new: it’s AAA battery powered and hooks up to your phone by plain old Bluetooth to control your games. It’s been available across the sea for more than year now, but Sony Ericsson is bringing it to these shores with a Zeemote edition W705 phone.

Size wise, the Zeemote JS1 is a perfect fit. You can clasp it in the top of your hand easily, moving every which way with the joystick with just your thumb and triggering every button with your fingers without a problem, and it’s a perfect size to put in your pocket.

It’s responsive too: we took the Zeemote JS1 for a spin with the official Fast & Furious game that comes with the bundle, and found ourselves swerving all over the place through pushing too hard, desperately trying to get back on track with a twitch of the nitro button around the back of the Zeemote JS. A gentle touch is needed, but therein lies the skill, and it’s something we’ll be going back to try and perfect over the coming weeks.

There are plenty more Zeemote JS1 compatible games available to buy for your Sony Ericsson W705 on T-Mobile, but if you act fast you’ll be able to get two more for free preloaded in limited edition packages, Planet Riders and DEEP Submarine Odyssey. The Zeemote JS1 has a lot of potential: it works with Nokia phones too, and other platforms are on the way, so you could do worse than pick one of these up next week – be sure to check out the gallery of hands-on shots in the meantime though.
