The Panasonic Lumix GH1 and G1 side by side

The Panasonic Lumix GH1, Pan’s Micro Four Thirds camera with HD video skills, isn’t out until next month, but we’ve just been out and about with the little SLR stopper. Come and see it close up in our hands-on gallery!

We were wowed by the Panasonic Lumix G1 when it launched last year, but Panasonic is back with a modded version to join the high-end camera HD video craze, along with the likes of Canon, Nikon and Pentax.

Panasonic Lumix G1 hands-on

Unlike its rivals though, the Panasonic Lumix G1 isn’t a DSLR: while, it’s got a 12.1MP sensor and interchangeable lenses, it’s far smaller too. As we saw with the G1 though, that doesn’t mean it scrimps on quality, and this time you’ll be able to get that image quality with video too. The Panasonic Lumix G1 handles 1080p at 25fps, and 720p at 50fps: we’ve already had a peek at slow-mo HD video on it, and it’s delish.

We took a little jaunt around sunny Windsor with it shooting stills and video, so check back tomorrow to see how the Panasonic Lumix GH1 works as well as looks. In the meantime, scoop up all the photos here in our galleryand feast your pupils on them!

One thing worth saying about Lumix GH1 is that if you buy Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-G1, the predecessor of the GH1, for say £450 and you buy a good HD video camcorder, like Sony DCR-SR35 HDD for £200, you’ll end up having image and HD video kit for £650.

Now, I as an Lumix GH1 owner, I can tell you that in 1080 HD mode, videos can get a bit jerky if you are shooting some action, like a football game or kids running around.

Digital camcorders are still much better at HD video, than DSLR.

Beside that, 4/3 sensor does the thing and image quality is excellent.
