The Asus Eee PC 1005HA Seashell is officially one of the sexiest, slenderest netbooks in laptopland. But if you have a particular aversion to shells, then check out these little lappies. They’re so thin they have to put coats over drains to walk across them…

MacBook Air
Apple’s lithe laptop, the MacBook Air, is just 19.4mm at its thickest and 4mm deep at its narrowest point. There’s no DVD drive and only one USB port, though. You do, however, get a reasonable NVIDIA GeForce graphics card, 128GB solid state drive and a trackpad with Apple’s multi-touch tech. Sexy, then. And all for the not-so-sexy price of £1,761!

Dell Adamo
The Dell Adamo flings off the shackles of Dell’s past (ie dowdy, dreary computers) and storms into this list with a super-svelte body. Dell’s slim machine is a mightily impressive slab of laptop. You get three USB ports, a Blu-ray drive and a 13.4-inch screen, all in a body that measures just 17.78mm at its thickest! the price isn’t quite as svelte, though, at £1,649 for an entry-level model.

MSI X-Slim X340
Want slim? Then check out the MSI X-Slim X340 ultra-slender netbook. Measuring 17.78mm at its thickest, MSI has managed to stuff in three USB ports and a 320GB hard drive. The X340 also sports an Intel ULV SU3500 processor for improved power performance – sucking just a sixth of the power traditional CPUs consume. And did we mention it has an HDMI port? No, well it does.

Sony VAIO P
Sony’s very own (“this is not a”) netbook, is so small it’ll fit in most pockets. It’s not small on features, though: With an eight-inch X-black LCD, two USB ports and memory stick slot, it weighs just 0.64kg and runs Windows Vista. The top-end Sony VAIO Ps com with a 128GB Solid State Drive, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor Z530 and a £1,369 price tag to boot.

Acer Aspire Timeline
The Acer Aspire Timeline isn’t out yet, but the fact it’s in this list suggests the Asus Seashell should be watching its skinny back. And with measurements like 24mm at its thickest, tapering down to a wafer-like 5mm, you begin to understand why. It’ll ship in three sizes, 13.3, 14.1 and 15.6 inch, with each toting Intel ULV processors, a HDMI port, and an immense 8-10 hours of battery, with storage options of up to 500GB hard drive or 64GB SSD. And with prices starting from around £477, who’s to say it won’t flatten the Seashell?

“They’re so thin they have to put coats over drains to walk across them…” !!!???

Yup, it’s an established fact that laptops walk on their lids rather than sliding along flat. I’ve seen it happen.
