Team Fortress 2’s Spy class demands subterfuge and trickery of the highest order. So it’s only right that Valve’s build up to the Spy update has included some of the most hilarious chicanery we’ve seen so far. After teasing Team Fortress 2 players with the promise of a Sniper class update, it was suddenly revealed that the Spy had been getting the class overhaul all along, and were presented with a brand new Meet the Spy video.
But even the launch of the Meet the Spy video didn’t go off without a hitch, and was leaked a few days too early by accident. Make sure you check the Team Fortress 2 blog to read the how Valve’s Robin Walker has been handling the dismissal of (all) those responsible.
As with any class update, which have included the Scout, Pyro, Heavy and Medic so far, there’s a host of new Achievements to unlock in order to get at the new equipment. You can see the full list of Achievements here, including Valve’s own special Achievement, which it has awarded itself for the video snafu. It reads: “Welcome to the internets: Fail to understand what ‘Private’ means on YouTube.”
For Team Fortress 2 players, reaching each of the three Achievement milestones will unlock new weapons, two of which have been revealed so far. First up is the Dead Ringer spy watch, which puts the player into cloak whilst playing a death animation for everyone else. Then you’ve got eight seconds to leg it or turn around and backstab your would be killer.
Then there’s the Cloak and Dagger spy watch, which gives Spies infinite invisibility. There’s a catch, of course: you still have a cloaking power meter, so you’ll have to stay still to regenerate power.
The update is expected to go live this Thursday.
