The Nokia RM-526 is the real name of the odd-looking ‘swivel’ phone we told you about back in April. This strange looking device has been confirmed as having passed through the US Federal Communications Commission approvals process.

The Nokia RM-526 is the name (or at least the development code-name) of a new handset from Nokia destined for the US market. We first became aware of its existence about a month ago when mock-up pictures appeared online, accompanied by slightly incredulous comments – it is a pretty odd shape for a Nokia – could it be real?

Well, yes, it would appear so. All mobile phones need to be cleared by the Federal Communications Commission before they can be sold in the US andthe Nokia RM-526 has just passed. Helpfully, this means that details of the phone’s specs are now available.

The Nokia RM-526 has dual-band CDMA/EVDO, with a QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth, a camera (specs unconfirmed) and will run Nokia’s Symbian Series 40 operating system. The phone is headed for US carrier Verizon later this year – it is not yet known if Nokia plans a global launch.

It looks like that weird form factor was on the money too – indicating that it may be aimed at the same tween messaging market as the Sidekick.
