Twitter has replied to users angered at its takedown of an @reply feature, apologising for its handling of the situation and admitting: “we screwed up”.

Earlier this week, Twitter removed an option to let you view replies from Twitterers you follow to those you don’t. It was only used by 3% of Twitter users but it was a vocal minority, and sparked an outcry. Twitter originally claimed it disabled the feature because it was confusing, then seemed to make a U turn the next day by claiming that it was a technical drain.

Now though, Twitter CEO Biz Stone has tried to clear the air by admitting that he didn’t fully explain the reasons behind the feature switch off, admitting “We screwed up from a communications perspective this week. When I heard that this change was going out, I rushed to write a blog post.”

Stone made clear that the feature is gone for good, but that Twitter is looking to come up with a solution that helps introduce new Twitter users via your feed still, so we’ll let you know if the microblogging sensation comes up with the goods.
