The Sony Reader could start displaying adverts on its e-Ink display, according to the man in charge. Read on to find out what he’s planning.

The Sony Reader is the Japanese giant’s e-reader to rival the Amazon Kindle range. At the moment, it doesn’t work wirelessly so you can only read e-books you’ve preloaded on to the Sony Reader. But those virtual pages could start including third party advertising, according to Steve Haber, president of Sony’s digital reading division.

In a recent interview, Haber let slip that advertising could become part of the Sony Reader business model: “I would imagine that when it comes to periodicals, newspapers and magazines, those businesses are built around the advertising model so I would imagine it going in that direction.”

There are no official plans to bring adverts to the Sony Reader, but you wouldn’t expect banners appearing in novels to go down well, so don’t expect this to happen until Sony figures out a way to deliver up to date publications to the Sony Reader just like the Amazon Kindle 2 and Kindle DX.
