The numbers are in. We asked you which gadget due in Summer you’d be buying first and you voted for the Palm Pre in droves, crushing the new iPhone. Read on for the full results.

Microsoft’s since denied a June Zune HD unveiling, but with the Palm Pre and new iPhone revealing taking place next month too, we wanted to know which was first on your shopping list, and you’ve told us in a landslide.

New iPhone: what we know so far

An immense 83% of you said you wanted a Palm Pre over the new iPhone or Zune HD, going against analyst predictions. Just 12% said they preferred the new iPhone, while a measly 5% wanted Microsoft’s Zune HD above all else.

Will the Palm Pre trump the new iPhone? webOS is certainly shaping up as a serious rival to iPhone OS 3.0, but with new iPhone hardware still up in the air, Apple could still throw a few surprises our way next month at WWDC.

I’ve heard about and seen pictures of the coming Pre, but what new iPhone? What hardware features does it have? Do you have a picture or description? When will it be available?

How does one choose when one doesn’t know?

You have to be kidding. On Engadget, everyone voted that the Google G1 and Android would outsell the iPhone and it fell rather short. Talk is cheap. There are only a limited number of tech-nerds in this world and Apple is not building iPhones for them. Most people do not need some hardware-heavy and user-unfriendly interface. Most users just want something easy to use and be offered good customer service. The Palm Pre is still an unknown quantity on both counts.

Remember the Storm? That was going to be an iPhone killer. Everyone was raving about it then they got their hands on it. I would wait until people have actually had a chance to use the thing before crowing inanely about the “success” of a given device.

Another proof that figures don’t lie, but liars can use figures…like you have.

I note that you’ve failed to release the raw numbers of your poll. How many people actually voted? 100? 1000?

My guess is that the actual numbers are so small that any results are meaningless and irrelevant. However, whoever wrote this decided that you needed some hits to jack up your scores so you can show this to advertisers.

This is bad for journalism and bad for your advertisers. Shame on you!

Hi Don: We don’t include figures as they add very little to the overall understanding, since polls like this are based on ratio. Look at any mainstream poll and you’ll see the same thing. However, I can tell you that well over a thousand people voted.

I will take the millions that actually have purchased an iPhone over a few thousand tech guys that want to purchase vapor-ware based on specs that they saw over the internet.

There’s a lot of iPhones around and if Apple updates…. I think people will buy.

Let’s wait and see until the Pre actually comes out.

I remember when the first iPhone came out and all it offered developers was a webOS environment to build applications.

And oh how did those developers scream and boo because they wanted to be able to do more.

Seriously, developing for the Pre is extremely limited to say the least. This is the iPhone from 2 years ago. When the Pre comes out and people start to compare apps (against the iPhone) – then its game on.
