Some iPhone specifications that may be from the soon to be released ‘iPhone 3′ have popped up on a Chinese forum. Assuming they are correct the next iPhone will be a bit faster, with more storage but wont be a huge departure from what we have now.

iPhone ’3′ specifications have appeared on the Chinese language phone forum Weiphone. Via some screengrabs of what is claimed to be the next-generation iPhone, iPhone spotters have gleaned the following likely specs:

  • 600MHz CPU Speed (up from 400MHz)
  • 256MB RAM (up from 128MB)
  • Digital Compass and FM
  • 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus
  • 32GB Storage

A faster processor would be nice – but 600 MHz isn’t that much faster than the 400 MHz we have now. Ditto the RAM and Storage increases – the boost is welcome, but it would have been good to see a real leap to bring the iPhone storage capacity in line with high-end iPods.

Likewise, bumping the camera up to 3.2 megapixels would have been big news a year and a half ago, but with 5 megapixels becoming the norm this seems a bit lacklustre. That just leaves the Digital Compass and FM transmitter. Can this really be all Apple is planning?

I think the specs are pretty realistic. After all, the speed bump is 50% faster – Not too shabby – and 32GB of solid state memory is not to be sniffed at. Sure, 3.2MP for the cam is perhaps a little small, but if the lighting and focusing issues are sorted, then it would be an excellent upgrade. Throw in some video support and the other mooted bits and I think it would be another winner. I never used 5MP on my old N95 anyway…3MP is fine for phone snaps IMO! :)

There was a rumour recently about Apple bulk purchasing OLED screens – I assume that they haven’t made it into the specs for this release of the iPhone?
