The Dell Mini 10v, a stripped down version of Dell’s 10 inch netbook, has gone on sale in the UK, and it comes in at just £199, undercutting other netbooks by a triple figure sum!

Netbook prices have been getting out of hand lately, with the Samsung N310 coming in at £399 for no apparent reason, but Dell has made a very smart move the other way with the release of the Dell Mini 10v netbook.

It’s a pared down version of the popular Dell Mini 10 netbook which ditches the 160GB hard drive for 8 gigs of flash memory, slightly lower 1024×576 resolution and a 1.6GHz processor. And by switching from Windows XP on the entry level model to Linux, Dell has brought the price of the Dell Mini 10v netbook in at under £200, a full £100 cheaper than the Dell Mini 10.

You can still bag a Windows XP version of the Dell Mini 10v with 160GB hard drive for £279, but if all you want to do is jump online and word process, there’s little reason to upgrade. The Dell Mini 10v netbook is on sale now, so get your order in stat!

I have the Dell Mini 9 on Vodafone and it is a great netbook. If this is anywhere near as good they will sell buckets of them. Will be interesting to see their return rates for people who aren’t prepared to make the effort to get used to using Linux though, apparently this is a big problem for all netbook manufacturers.

I love what Dell is doing with this. It’s taking it back to the ethos that made the Eee PC 700/701 so successful: bare bones, cheap, portable. The difference is the Mini 10v has a screen that’s legible. I’m still on a 701 today, but when the time comes to switch, this is a serious option.

Looks like its time to throw out my eee 700 :-)
