BioShock 2, the sequel to one of the best (and scariest) games of last year, will feature a single-player mode designed by developer 2K Marin, but a multi-player mode designed by Dark Sector, Unreal Tournament and BioShock PS3 developer Digital Extremes.
The unusual move of one company handling the single-player and one handling the multi-player may in part be explained by BioShock’s (and BioShock 2′s presumably) single-player mode being very heavy on story – the original first-person shooter BioShock was set in a drowned Art Deco city called Rapture and based on the philosophy of American writer Ayn Rand. For multi-player, Digital Extreme appear to be stepping away from the storyline of the single-player and instead creating an almost standalone game set as a “prequel” to BioShock, before underwater Art Deco city Rapture’s collapse into chaos.
BioShock 2′s multi-player segment is set to feature players as genetically-enhanced Plasmid testers witnessing the “fall of Rapture”. Players will be able to earn experience, like in Call Of Duty 4, to get upgraded weapons, Plasmids etc. And combat is promised to be “fast-paced.”
