The MacBook 3G, hinted at by an Apple job posting earlier this week, is starting to look more likely: insiders now claim that Snow Leopard, the next version of Mac OS X, will support Macs with 3G built in.

AppleInsider has it from sources in the loop on Apple’s plans that Snow Leopard has support for 3G hardware built in, revealed by the System Profiler application tucked away inside the eagerly awaited OS. According to the inside sources, native 3G support is listed next to other hardware built into the Mac and MacBook range, such as Bluetooth and AirPort, so it’s not simply support for 3G dongles.

If true, that would surely point to a MacBook 3G, since there aren’t any real advantages of building it into a machine that isn’t portable: you’re not exactly likely to take a Mac Pro to a cafe with you. The question is, just how big would a 3G MacBook be?

Would it be an updated MacBook Air, the fabled MacBook nano or a giant Apple tablet/iPod touch pro? Unlike the new iPhone, the evidence is still scant, but we should at least be seeing Snow Leopard on show next month at WWDC.

Apple hates netbooks as much as they hate blu-ray. My money is on a 6″ (or bigger) iPod Touch with built in 3G. Interesting to see if they go the carrier subsidised route. Hasn’t done them any harm with the iPhone and mobile broadband is getting pretty big business now.
