Twitter Search, the search engine for the micro blogging service, is about to undergo a major revamp, with new features including search through links inside tweets, as well as ranking your 140 character pearls of wisdom by user reputation. Google watch out!

Twitter’s VP of operations, Santosh Jayaram, has just let slip that a few big changes are coming to the Twitter Search engine. When the updates arrive, Twitter Search will begin trawling and indexing links contained within tweets, not just the text itself. Given that Twitter now has more than 25 million users nattering away, that means Twitter Search will be able to cover not just what people are saying right now, but what’s appearing across the whole web in realtime.

Twitter Search will also rank tweets about trending (most popular topics) based on the Twitterer’s reputation, so you’ll see the most insightful messages on a subject, not just retweet after retweet of the same link. Jayaram didn’t say how the Twitter Search ranking system would decide this, but you’d have to expect factors like the number of followers you have and amount of retweets you garner to play a part.

We’ve said before that Twitter Search is an area where the start-up could pull in the cash and beat Google by offering realtime web search: this could be just how it achieves that, so we’ll bring you more details as and when.
