The Sony PS3 will get a price cut this year, but not before or during E3, according to Brian Farrell, CEO of THQ. E3, the world’s largest videogame trade show is due to take place in early June in Los Angeles.
Farrell, speaking to analysts about THQ’s “disappointing” fourth quarter financial results ($431 million net loss in the fiscal year), said that he expected a price cut for the Sony PS3 later in the year, but doubted that Sony would announce one at the show itself or before (despite recent price cuts by Sony for its aging PS2 console). Although Farrell did caveat his comments by saying: “the right people to ask about prices are Sony”. And, as the financials show, Farrell clearly hasn’t got the inside track on exactly how the videogames market is playing currently.
Farrell also commented on the Nintendo Wii – saying that he felt “softening” in demand for Wii consoles might be due to the lack of a price cut from Nintendo. “The [Nintendo] Wii has been going for an unprecedented amount of time without a price cut,” said Farrell.
