The Panasonic Lumix GH1, Panasonic’s high end camera cum HD camcorder, is about to arrive to do battle with the Canon EOS 500D and the Nikon D5000, and we know when and how much. Read on for the info, but you might want to brace yourself…

The Panasonic Lumix GH1 was announced two months ago, but the 1080p filming camera’s shipping date and price have been MIA. Until now that is: we’ve just had the details fleshed out.

You’ll be able to pick up the four thirds Micro System Panasonic Lumix GH1 from early June – in the US at least – for £1,299.99. Compare that to the body only £869 for the Canon EOS 500D, or the £719.99 for the Nikon D5000, and a few questions marks should start floating around.

Still, pony up for the Panasonic Lumix GH1 and you’ll get a 12.1MP sensor, full HD recording at 24fps and 720p at 60fps, plus Intelligent Auto facetracking that remembers which of your friends have been in photos before and focuses on them. And while it’s smaller than a DSLR, the Panasonic Lumix GH1 still offers interchangeable lenses. We’ll let you know if it’s a bargain once we take it for a test drive.
