BlackBerry Storm 2 is already hot mobile gossip, but now RIM CEO Jim Balsillie has made it official. BlackBerry Storm 2 is the follow up to RIM’s divisive iPhone Killer, which was widely criticised for its buggy software and unresponsive touchscreen tech. If BlackBerry Storm 2 can remedy those issues, stick in a WiFi chip and harness the power of BlackBerry App World, RIM may finally be able to give Apple a run for its money.

Balsillie didn’t go into too much depth about what kind of features the BlackBerry Storm 2 would be packing, but he did talk up the original Storm “as a huge success in terms of sales and adoption”, even in spite of its lukewarm reception.

RIM’s gaze is still firmly fixed on the iPhone too. “We see this very large and untapped consumer market,” Balasillie told analysts and investors, “We have next-generation devices with [touchscreen] and the whole roadmap.”

There’s no indication of when the BlackBerry Storm 2 would be landing, but earlier rumours have pointed to an autumn launch. It is believed that the missing WiFi connection will be added, the haptic (clicking) touchscreen action will be improved and that RIM is already working on an enhanced text input system.
