Metal Detector is an app for that rare breed of Android user who thinks that the T-Mobile G1 / HTC Dream just isn’t quite geeky enough.

Metal Detector turns your G1 into a – yes – metal detector. The app achieves this feat by making use of the built-in magnetometer that the G1 uses as a compass (its how your phone knows which direction you are facing in apps like NRU).

You can configure the app with different sound effects or vibrations and fiddle with the sensitivity a bit to get the best results.

The magnetometer isn’t very sensitive, so Metal Detector isn’t super-accurate. We doubt you’ll have much luck finding buried treasure with just your phone, but if you want to find a set of keys that aren’t too well hidden or just want a new party trick to impress friends who are doubtless now quite sick of your fancy Android phone, this could be just the job.
