Despite being better positioned than most companies to ride out the recession, Apple has seen Mac sales fall 20 percent in recent times. If rumours are correct, the Cupertino firm is looking to claw back sales by offering cheaper iMac and MacBook models in the near future.

AppleInsider claims that Apple will launch more affordable versions of the two models – already its most popular laptop and desktop offerings – as soon as this spring, although it says pricing is yet to be decided. The cheapest MacBook is currently £719 and the cheapest iMac £949.

Interestingly, AppleInsider’s sources also poured cold water on the ever-present Apple netbook rumours, saying that the firm has “absolutely no interest” in catering to the current netbook market, but will eventually launch a Newton-esque web tablet – a product that has taken far longer to complete than first envisioned.
