BD-Live was billed as an exciting way to experience bonus entertainment on your Blu-ray player, but so far it’s been a damp squib that’d struggle to get the most avid movie fan excited. Well, that could be set to change thanks to a new service bring video on demand to your Blu-ray player.

Developed by German firm Enteractive, the technology will allow certain Blu-ray discs to unlock rentable movie content. The discs sync your BD-Live Blu-ray player with an online rental service that streams video into your living room.

Enteractive says that the service is so speedy that you can watch the movie while it’s still downloading, describing the process as “just like watching a DVD”. You’ll need a high-speed Internet connection, naturally.

Enteractive has not revealed what sort of content the service will support, but we’d imagine it’ll be looking to incorporate its technology into Blu-ray discs from all the major studios, perhaps offering access to older full-length movies as a bonus feature for certain discs.

We’ll bring you more on this later this year, as it’s apparently due to get a full official launch at IFA in September.
