Farewell, PSP 2 – you’re old news now; instead it’s the PSP Go! which looks set to be the true successor to Sony’s handheld. The congealing glob of PSP rumour has finally settled and, though still unofficial, we’re beginning to get a clear picture of what the new console will look like and what it’s bringing to the table. Read on to find out.

So, why PSP Go! then? Again, we should clarify that Sony has remained tight-lipped on the subject, but according to 1Up’s sources, the Japanese tech giant is dropping numerical titles – such as PSP 2 or PSP-4000 – for a proper word. Go! seems like an obvious and sensible choice mainly because Sony already has a range of PSP accessories sporting the Go! moniker, including the Go!Cam camera and Go!View video on-demand service.

As has been heavily rumoured for some time, UMD is very much gone. Instead a newly enhanced download store will take its place, packing an extra 100 classic and brand new PSP titles to download. In fact Gran Turismo Mobile is rumoured to be one of those new launch titles, but we’re going to remain deeply sceptical about that one until we actually see it in action.

There’ll be two versions to choose between, sporting 8GB and 16GB of flash memory.

The hardware itself won’t be changing much. The sliding screen appears to be about the only new addition. It doesn’t sound like there’ll be any touchscreen functionality and no extra analogue stick either. However, due to the fact that the controls are stashed underneath the screen, we’re anticipating something a little more compact than the current models.

We can’t wait to find out the exact dimensions, specs and so on, but it looks like we’ll just have to wait until E3 for Sony to spill the beans. When it does though, the handheld wars stand to get a whole lot fiercer.

Hmm, surely this should have RUMOUR plastered all over the title, as clearly there is no Sony press release, or even a single official source from Sony with this “news”.

Still it’s nice to see your agenda coming through again, as this rumour (and thats all it is) will effectively kill PSP sales between now and September.

I assume Nintendos cheque is in the post. When will the Microsoft cheque appear for the PS4 news stories?

When will the Sony cheque appear in the post for Freeman?

Freeman: it does have “rumour” stated high and clear in the first paragraph…

This site seems to lack alot of journalistic integrity.

Clearly the title needed to say it was a rumour, as that what gets posted via RSS, but then I assume you want sensationalist news to get people to click the links to come here…
