Panasonic plans to launch an OLED TV within the next 18 months to two years, according to reports. Smarthouse.au claims that senior Panasonic executives yesterday told an assembly of Australian journalists that the firm is currently researching HD OLED TV tech able to offer a larger screen and longer lifespan than the XEL-1 TVs currently being sold by Sony.
If rumours are accurate the OLED TV, which is being developed in conjunction with fellow Japanese tech giant Toshiba, will be a 37-inch model an inch thick.
Confusingly, Smarthouse.au also claims that Panasonic plans to deliver its longer panel life (50,000 hours of use compared to Sony’s 30,000 hours) by “fitting a new metal membrane inside a prototype 20.8-inch panel to move light more efficiently”, which suggests that the first Panasonic OLED TV will be a 21-incher rather than the previously mentioned 37-inch screen. Of course, it could be that the company has a stable of OLED TVs in the works, with a 21-inch model coming sooner than the larger 37-inch model.
It’s all rumour and speculation at the moment, of course, but we’ll keep an ear to the ground for more OLED TV-related gossip in the coming months.
