Google I/O is the Android developer’s equivalent of the Nokia Developer Summit – a forum and expo for Android programmers and software vendors to get together, talk shop and swap ideas. At the Android developer’s blog, Google’s Android Developer Advocate Dan Morrill has been talking up the event and some of the special things Google has planned.

Google I/O might not sound like a barrel of laughs – two days in the Moscone Center, San Francisco from May 27-28, eating, drinking and most importantly talking Android development with some of the top people working on the OS. For Android heads, however, Google is promising that this will be the “Android Developer Event Of The Year”.

At this inaugural event are some workshops and talks that might give us some pointers as to what we can expect in the Android world in the coming months.  For example, “Coding for life – Battery life, that is” aims to educate coders on how to squeeze more juice from Android handsets, revealing the ways that an app can drain the battery and how to mitigate against it.

“Looking Beyond the Screen” is about text-to-speech and ‘eyes-free’ interaction – both making Android more friendly to blind/partially sighted users and making apps that can be used without peeping at the display (e.g. apps for drivers).  “Mastering the Android Media Framework” is about making more of the multimedia power of Android devices, while “Turbo charge your UI” aims to streamline the interface for a quicker response.

There are also talks planned on writing real-time games on Android, which should please those who feel that the iPhone is edging far ahead in the gaming arena. Google has promised ‘several surprises’ over the two day event too, which is usually code for ‘several new products’ but we’ll wait and see what Google has in store.
