Dead Rising 2 will have multiplayer, making it the second game this week to drop a surprise multiplayer component. What’s next? Bioshock 2? Capcom head honcho Keiji Inafune confirmed Dead Rising 2’s multiplayer capabilities at a recent Capcom press event. Read on for more details.

Aside from giving the official thumbs up, Infanue wasn’t allowed to go into much more detail, “Single-player alone is not going to cut it,” he said. “So rest assured we are going to put multiplayer in the game, but I can’t go into specifics about what type of multiplayer as that directly relates to some of the game systems that we don’t want to talk about at this event.” “It will be online multiplayer, so keep that in mind.”

Capcom’s got a lot of development time to decide what makes the multiplayer cut; the main obstacle is the number of on-screen enemies that Dead Rising 2 boasts and sheer latency. Co-operative play seems like the obvious first choice for multiplayer, seeing as Left 4 Dead has already shown us just how much fun it can be when a few mates get together and slaughter the undead.

However, even the horde attacks in Left 4 Dead are limited to tens of zombies at a time, paced out in waves throughout a level. That’s nothing compared to the 7,000 that Capcom’s partner Blue Castle Games has apparently achieved in the Dead Rising 2 game engine. Actually, 6,000 zombies on screen is the number that Capcom has promised, but still; it’s nothing short of a helluva lot.

Straight up death match would seem a bit boring, so maybe Capcom will find away of letting players control the throngs of zombies instead.

Capcom has also released a brand new Dead Rising 2 trailer, showing off the main character, Chuck Greene, and some of the new moves and outfits, including a moose’s head. No, we don’t get it either. Check it out here.
