Nokia has used the inaugural Nokia Developer Summit to unveil the N97 Beta Software Development Kit (SDK) and a competition for programmers to create ‘widgets’ – mini apps that can run on the N97′s home screen.

Nokia has set up the Nokia Developer Summit as a forum for Symbian software developers to get together with the company and discuss cool new things that can be done with the various flavours of the Symbian OS, as well as push new channels like the Ovi Store. It is also a good place for Nokia to make developer-related announcements.

Nokia has just announced the N97 Beta SDK. This Software development kit is intended to give coders a leg up in creating software for the Nokia N97 and will let them play with new OS features and software interfaces to the N97′s hardware before the phone is available.

Attendees can try to get themselves a free Nokia N97 by entering the Nokia N97 Widget Competition. Even as you read this, coders are hacking away to create Widgets that will run on the N97′s home screen. The creator of the winning widget will receive a Nokia N97 pre-installed with their widget. The widget will then go on to the Ovi Store as a free download, along with two runners up.
