iPhone App Store hits 1bn

The App Store for iPhone and iPod touch hit the 1,000,000,000 download mark overnight, setting the bar sky high for every other soon-to-be-launched smartphone app service.

As predicted, the iPhone App Store ticker hit 1bn on Thursday, and while the landmark number didn’t trigger a video of a new iPhone or anything unexpected (some enterprising iPhone owners found the image in advance by putting their computer clocks forward), it’s still a momentous feat considering the App Store opened just nine months ago.

The App Store achievement is a big deal for the iPhone user who pockets a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card, iPod touch, Time Capsule and MacBook Pro as the prize winner, but it’s a big deal for smartphone users on every platform too.

RIM, Nokia, Palm and Microsoft all want to emulate the success of the iPhone and App Store with their own versions (either just launched or just about to be) and now Apple’s set a tangible target to hit. Can they make it? You can bet they’ll be shouting about it if they do.
