The Nintendo Wii has sold over 8 million consoles in Japan alone, according to unofficial figures released by the influential Famitsu Magazine. Those spectacular sales figures haven’t stopped a senior Sony figure saying that the Nintendo Wii is only played occasionally by most owners.
As well as publishing the total sales of the Nintendo Wii in Japan, Famitsu has also released sales figures for the top five selling Nintendo Wii games in Japan to date since launch in December 2006: Wii Sports (not bundled in Japan with the console) has sold best, with nearly 3.5 million copies. Following that are: Wii Fit, Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii and Super Smash Bros. Brawl (nearly 1.8 million copies sold).
In separate, but related news, Sony’s Peter Dille (Senior VP, Marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America), told Gamasutra: “Microsoft owns the office; Sony owns the living room; and Wii owns the closet. People who are playing the Wii bring it out when friends come over and then put it back away.” Strong words from Sony, whose PS3 console is currently duking it out with the Microsoft Xbox 360 for… last place in the current console wars. The Nintendo Wii is dominating games consoles sales worldwide.
