Sony-Ericsson are working on an Adroid handset that will be on sale by the end of this year, claims an article in DigiTimes. This rather flies in the face of SE boss Hideki Komiyama recent announcement in a Reuters interview that the company would not have a phone running Google’s OS any time soon.

Sony Ericsson has been rumoured to be working on an Android phone in an attempt to boost its rather flagging fortunes of late. These rumours were dampened down a little last week when the Sony Ericsson CEO said that although the company was investigating Android, there was still a lot of work to be done before anything approaching a product would be available.

It’s a bit surprising then, that DigiTimes is reporting that Sony Ericsson is not only preparing an Android handset but that handset will be available before the end of the year.

DigiTimes cites an article in the Chinese-language newspaper Commercial Times. Commercial Times claims to have seen internal documents from Orange in EUrope that confirm the existence of Sony Ericsson’s unnamed Android device and lay out a release timetable of the end of 2009.

If true, this could be just what Sony Ericsson need – but we aren’t holding our breath.
