Fallout 3 is preparing to expand again with its third set of DLC, Broken Steel. We’ve been left eager for more Fallout 3 action since the surprise announcement of Fallout: New Vegas earlier in the week and Fallout 3: Broken Steel looks like a great way to fulfill our post-apocalyptic desires. This latest set of DLC picks up where Fallout 3 left off, using your existing save games and continuing the story into a brand new chapter. As always, more details below.
Fallout 3: Broken Steel carries on the story of Aqua Pura and allows you to keep exploring the irradiated Capital Wasteland even after you’ve finished the main plot, which conveniently addresses one of the main grumbles about the current game. For your Xbox / Games for Windows LIVE points outlay, you get a fresh five-hour long adventure in the mutant-filled wasteland.
The extra story, as the name implies, deals directly with the Brotherhood of Steel forces, allowing you to join their ranks in an attempt to drive out the Enclave once and for all. Key to this effort is tracking down a Tesla Coil to help restore some of the pre-war machinery.
In addition, Bethesda is raising the level cap to 30, which is a huge relief to those who were disappointed when their characters impolitely maxed out a meager level 20. There are also two new areas to explore – the Presidential Metro Tunnels and Adams Air Force Base – and a host new perks to play with. One of these is called ‘Puppies’ allowing you to replace Dogmeat if he gets killed in action (or in our case, by catching a laser pistol blast to the muzzle after he stood blocking the door one too many times).
To counter your new combat power, there’s a whole new class of high-level enemies, including Super Mutant Overlords, Feral Ghoul Reavers and Enclave Hellfire Troopers.
Fallout 3: Broken Steel is launching on PC and Xbox 360 on May 5th for 800 Microsoft points. Here’s hoping for a smoother Xbox launch this time.
