Nintendo has dropped a few hints about a possible VoIP service for the new DSi console. Skype seems like an obvious choice, what with it being the most prolific VoIP service around and everything. Not to mention the fact it has already come to PSP. Hardware-wise, there’s nothing stopping it, but now Nintendo has denied having any plans to support Skype on its handheld.

The launch of the new Nintendo DSi handheld has brought more than a couple of cameras to the table – it has ushered in a new DSiWare download store. Given that the console sports a microphone, speakers and a WiFi connection, there doesn’t seem to be anything stopping a VoIP service from happening.

Both Nintendo boss, Satoru Iwata, and creative director, Shigeru Miyamoto, have made statements recently that have led to speculation about a possible DSi phone service. A Skype rep has even admitted to TechRadar that it would be technically possible.

But despite this, Nintendo is keeping mum, telling CVG only that “We have no plans to release a Skype application for Nintendo DS or DSi.” So, no dice then? Or is this merely hardnosed negotiating tactics?

They’re hype building, they must be. Despite strong sales, Nintendo must still be gunning for more DSi Lite converts, and Wi-Fi VOIP seems the way to do it.
