iPhone users will soon get free Wi-Fi to go with their lattes: Starbucks is bringing BT Openzone to the chain, and it’s free for owners of Apple’s blower!
It’s been a good day for iPhone owners all around: new data detectors are on the way for iPhone OS 3.0, we’ve published the first part of our all new top 100 iPhone apps, and now to add to that, iPhone users will now be able to hop on to Wi-Fi hotspots for free at Starbucks across the country.
Starbucks is switching from T-Mobile Hotspots for Wi-Fi starting today. BT Openzone hotspots will be installed at 678 of its UK stores over the next few months, meaning that iPhone users will be able to jump on board for nada as part of their O2 contract.
The change will happen gradually, so if you’ve got a T-Mobile account, it’s not going to be locked out of all Starbucks just yet, but soon you’ll need to switch to BT Openzone… or buy an iPhone, to keep surfing while you slurp.
No, it’s not the totally free Wi-Fi we heard rumours about last year, but at least you’ll be able to catch up on BBC iPlayer or make Skype calls while you sip.
