Nokia 5800 owners might wish they had waited a few months before getting their XpressMusic handset – Taiwanese component suppliers say that Nokia is planning to upgrade the device with a better touchscreen.
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a pretty capable phone, but it currently uses a resiistive touchscreen rather thana capacitive screen like the iPhone. That may soon change, according to a Taiwan-based component supplier that claims Nokia has ordered a supply of capacitive screens for use in a refresh of the 5800.
“Nokia’s initial orders for capacitive touch panels will be enough for the production of two million 5800 handsets, with shipments of the new version to begin in May-June,” the source told DigiTimes.
Capacitive screens are generally seen as having better response times and more sensitivity than resistive screens (although resistive screens can be used with a stylus as well as a finger). Interestingly, capacitive screens are also a lot better at supporting multitouch – could this be what Nokia has in mind?
