iPhone OS 3.0 is still some months from release, but that hasn’t stopped hackers from trying to jailbreak it, just to be ready. Should you find yourself with a copy of the latest beta release, rest assured it can now be busted wide open.
iPhone OS 3.0 beta is keeping everyone in the iPhone ecosystem busy. From the legitimate testers and developers to obsessive feature hunters and, now, teams of hackers trying to learn how to Jailbreak the new OS.
Jailbreaking the iPhone – basically, removing the protection that stops you installing non-approved applications – is easily achieved using the QuickPWN tool from the Dev Team, a group of iPhone hackers. Following the release of iPhone OS 3.0 beta 3 on Tuesday, a spin-off team of developers at QuickPwn.com released a version of teh tool that will Jailbreak the beta release too.
This is pretty much the definition of a niche product – if you don’t know if you need it then you almost certainly don’t, but the QuickPwn.com guys say that this will enable developers who are coding for both the new v3.0 OS and the Jailbroken version of the same to keep coding in preparation for the official release.
Although we don’t expect many of you to rush off and grab it, QuickPwn is yet another example of how difficult it must be for Apple to keep control of the iPhone platform. If coders can hit even a fast-moving target like an OS Beta, what hope is there that Apple will be able to keep a lid on the final stable release?
