Gamers would prefer to give up their Wii or lose a PS3 than kiss goodbye to their beloved Xbox 360, a new survey has shown.

It seems Microsoft’s winning the war for button-bashing hearts and minds, even with its continued struggle against the Red Ring of Death. And it’s no close call either. Read on for the stats.

The results of a survey of online shoppers carried out by review website Ciao show 7% of those questioned would keep their Xbox 360 if they had to choose one gadget above all others.

That pales in comparison to the 71% who said they couldn’t live without a laptop (we second that one), but the Xbox 360 comes in ahead of Nintendo Wii wanters at 5% and die hard PS3 fans at just 2%.

In light of those figures, Sony‘s accusation yesterday that Microsoft is “writing cheques” for exclusivity on the Xbox 360 out of insecurity seems a little strange.

In another surprising twist, the survey found that 8% couldn’t live without their iPhone, just 1% more than ‘fessed up to their BlackBerry addiction. But the real question here is Xbox 360 and PS3 sales aside: does the Xbox 360 provide more longevity? Does it really worm its way into gamers’ hearts, or is it down to the bigger back catalogue of games?

I’d say the games catalogue plays a huge part. I’m lucky enough to own all three consoles, and for gaming I’d choose the Xbox 360. That said, it did suffer the RROD last weekend, so its in my bad books at the moment.

  • Simon

And I don’t get why? It’s not like it’s got the best lineup of games anymore (PS3 has that), and it’s not like it’s reliable either, it’s not like it’t even good value for money.

I don’t think I can see a single good attribute about the Xbox360. I think what’s happened, is Microsoft have brainwashed their gamers by spreading FUD against the competition, and now have such strong brand loyalty, even RROD and E74 error will not sway them.

I still laugh when Xbots spread 2006 “news” that PS3 has no games and it’s online is inferior to XBox. Some people need to wake up and see how they have been manipulated (James Holland, looking at you here).

Simon – I’ll admit I own lots more Xbox games. That’s probably because I’ve owned it much longer than the PS3, but it does irk me that I have to pay for Xbox Live access, and the RROD issue continues to astound. The PS3 will probably get more and more use, especially as I’ve started seeing more games that appeal, and I’m becoming a HD snob and only buying Blu-Rays. But at the moment I stand by the fact that I, personally, have found more games, and more DLC that I enjoy on the 360 overall. It’s a personal choice, and depends massively on the type of games you play. And yes, I’m counting Lost and Damned in that. The Wii, by the way, hasn’t been switched on for over a month, much to my shame I just don’t have the energy to swing it around after a day at work!

Lots of people love the 360 – amazingly even the ones on their fourth or fifth console. In spite of the RROD problems, it still offers a great gaming experience.

(And at the risk of upsetting PS3 fanboy Simon, the back catalogue and online experience are still superior to the PS3 – sorry! If Microsoft were capable of brainwashing then Vista wouldn’t be a minority OS)

I have both ps3 and 360 and I have to agree with James Holland. Sure games like killzone 2 got me hooked for ages just trying to get into the weekly honours ranks. But the console I keep going back to and am back to at the mo is xbox 360. It’s things like xbox live and its back catlogue of games that make it my games console of choice.
On the flip slide I constantly use the ps3 for streaming tv episodes etc as it’s just soo quite.

budget wise i still prefer PS2 only:)

  • Peter

How many owners of each console were actually questioned in that poll? The results are utterly meaningless lol

Just posting the results of silly polls likwe this with no contextualising ends up making you look like a stupid 360 fanboy.

Given your comments in the past however its pretty clear thats exactly what you are.

This is after all the guy who said Killzone 2 doesnt look any better than Gears 2 lol

    @James Holland

Without playing all the games on offer, HOW DO YOU KNOW?

Surely you have to have at least played demos of the games to decide if it’s something that you want.

or is this just “LBP Syndrome”, where people look at the outside box of the game and decide it’s not their cup of tea, without ever investigating any deeper?

@Simon, as I said it’s a purely personal choice. I just haven’t seen many games that’re on the PS3 and not on the 360 that have grabbed me personally. Again, I stress, the word personally. Don’t get me wrong I do play PS3 games, and while I’ve only owned one for around six months I’ve had access to one at work since before it was released. I can’t claim to have played every game, but then I doubt you can either. As for LBP, I love it, and haven’t found anyone that hasn’t so far. Not sure I’d get myself too worked up about people who judge games by their cover either.

@Alex, I used to stream to my 360 using a Mac and Rivet, but since it bit the RROD dust I’m usng the PS3 for everything, including video. It’s lovely, but I wish it would do a better job of upscaling video.

  • Simon

LOL, “better job of upscaling video”. You of course realize the PS3 is one of the best scalers on the market, as it’s purely software based.

It’s on par with expensive hardware scalers in pro cinema testings.

(it did well then, but it’s been improved since to improve cadence performance)

  • http://www.gravatar.com James Holland

Of course, but it doesn’t seem to upscale anything but DVDs. Considering it’s also designed as a media hub, that seems an oversight. Where’s the love for DivX? Or are my DivX files too low quality to begin with?

  • Simon

Erm it upscales PS1/PS2 games, it upscales PlayTV. It also scales MPEG4 and DivX content on the HDD.

It’s not really Sony’s fault that users like Mt Holland can’t be bothered to read the online manuals linked on the XMB.

  • Trumpet

This study seems to contradict my experiences. I know three people in the last month that have traded in an xbox360 to buy themselves a ps3. the main reason given for the swap was after having two consoles each RROD they didn’t want the risk anymore and where worried every time they turned the console on.

  • FG

I personally havent seen 1 thing on ps3 so far that would warrent me to even bother with it again , Ive had (7) ps3 break on me and not 1 did sony replace or repair for free beings they was all not a month old . I find it comical to read how the ps3 runs so good , I have a 100% failure rate with it . I cannot gamble on another .
