Sony may be refusing to replace old models of its PS3 that feature PS3 backwards-compatibility like-with-like, if they reach the end of their serviceable life within warranty.

A forum poster at TAWKN.com from Ontario, Canada, has apparently been told by his local Sony service centre that his within-warranty older-model Sony PS3, that had backwards-compatibility so it could play Sony PS2 games, is not directly replaceable.

Having failed, the Sony centre are proposing to give the poster a newer-model Sony PS3, but these are no longer backwards-compatible and feature several other minor hardware revisions (the lack of extra USB ports and built-in card reader being most notable).

Sony’s answer appears to be that because that PS3 model isn’t being made any more (it was still available in shops until last year), despite the poster having a five year extended warranty, it cannot replace like-with-like. The poster’s verdict: “If I wanted to go through this much bullsh*t, I would have bought an Xbox!”

I don’t know what this guy wants them to do, wave a magic wand and turn out something thats no longer manufacturered?

Who cares anyway, the newer PS3′s are much better anyway, they run totally silently, and run so much cooler.

Most companies, if products are discontinued, keep a stock of components and units aside for warranty repairs and replacements.
And while you (and I) may not miss the PS2 backwards-compatibility or extra USB ports much, some gamers may. So it’s fairly poor for Sony not to be able to offer those that want them, older model replacements.

Or perhaps they want to move people to the more uptodate models, with cooler running RSX and Cell chips, as they are more reliable.
