The creator of the Metal Gear Solid series, Hideo Kojima, has admitted that his company Kojima Productions is facing “pressure” from Konami to create the next Metal Gear game, despite Kojima previously stating that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots would definitely be the last in the series.
But Kojima has laid several surprising hints as to where Metal Gear could go next as a series, even if the next game isn’t strictly a sequel to Metal Gear Solid 4
In a wide-ranging and lengthy interview with Kikizo, Hideo Kojima spoke of his desire to work with western developers: “There are many development companies outside of Japan working with Konami, and I believe that they’re all special in some way. If we were to team up with them I’d have to try to help them do what they do best as production studios.”
Kojima also said that he was unlikely to personally “reboot” the Metal Gear series by remaking earlier games such as Metal Gear 1 and 2: “If someone else were to do it… that could be an interesting approach. If I get an offer from an overseas company saying they really want to do it, that could be an option.”
That said, Kojima said that a new Metal Gear Solid game was likely to come only from within his company: “What you expect is probably only possible by Kojima Productions.”
So, does this mean possible Westernised remakes of Metal Gear 1 and 2 sometime in the future? Will Kojima switch to the Western-popular Unreal engine for Metal Gear Solid 5? Or is the man just shooting the breeze, as enigmatic as ever? Time will tell… but if Kojima has been listening to the fans, it’s time to retire Snake but not the Metal Gear Solid series.
