BBC iPlayer HD is go

Categories: Computers & Accessories News   Tags: , ,

BBC iPlayer has just gone HD, the BBC has announced. Starting from today, you’ll be able to stream and download selected shows in high-def, as promised. Huzzah!

ISPs across the land will be shaking at the BBC iPlayer HD news: the best catch up service in the country just got better, by adding a notch of hi-res programming to its belt. Top shows including the next Dr Who specials will be on show at twice the resolution previously on offer on BBC iPlayer.

The Beeb has also announced it’ll be releasing a new BBC iPlayer Desktop as well as a BBC iPlayer cross platform download manager, so you can download HD shows via PC, Mac or Linux. A diagnostic manager will now automatically detect your connection speed and adjust image quality accordingly.

The HD service won’t be available on BBC iPlayer via Virgin Media, PS3 or other devices just yet, but Auntie says it’s working on it so stay tuned.

I am glad I don’t work for an ISP … they are not going to be amused at this one.

@Simon, except that the Adbobe AIR and Flash EULAs forbid use on games consoles and also playback very poorly on even fairly powerful graphics hardware…. Maybe you can use http://linuxcentre.net/get_iplayer which then allows you to download the iPlayer HD content without DRM and then you can play it back on your media player of choice :-) (shameless plug BTW)
