The NEC Valuestar W is not only NEC‘s latest media centre, it’s also the the ugliest all in one PC we’ve ever pushed our peepers across. Read on for all the info, if you’re not too faint hearted.
You’d be forgiven for thinking the NEC Valuestar W was a 1980s CRT TV with built in Betamax (or is that a George Foreman grill underneath?), but the NEC Valuestar W is a genuine media centre destined for consumer living rooms. At least that’s what NEC hopes.
Now, don’t get us wrong: we like retro TVs, but in mahogany, not car bumper black plastic.
If you can get past the looks, the NEC Valuestar W is a turbocharged tank underneath: inside is a water-cooled Intel Core 2 Quad processor, 4 gigs of RAM, Blu-ray drive and 1TB of hard disk space, plus a TV tuner. Up front, that screen is a roomy 22 inches across.
But if you ask us, it’s a lot to ask for anyone to overlook that styling. Particularly as this is a gadget you’re going to spent a lot of time, well, looking at.
The NEC Valuestar W looks like an 80s throwback and no mistake. The question is, with delicious all-in-one PCs like the Dell Studio One 19 on the horizon, is there any excuse for choosing this ugly piece of plastic to keep yourself entertained?
