The iPhone OS 3.0 beta has just been updated by Apple, prompting a renewed scrabble around for signs of new features in upcoming Apple handsets.
iPhone OS 3.0 isn’t ready for a proper release yet, but members of the iPhone Developers Program can download the current beta version. Previous beta releases have been responsible for many of the rumours of new features both in the upcoming OS and in future versions of the iPhone hardware.
By poking around in the guts of the the iPhone OS 3.0 beta, developers have found configuration files and unused icons that point to both long-requested features like video recording and surprises like a built-in FM transmitter that may form part of the next-generation of iPhones.
iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 3 is out now and early adopters are already reporting significant speed improvements and tweaks to the new Spotlight search app. Unfortunately, Apple says that a glitch in the new beta makes it difficult too run existing Apps compiled for the older 2.0 OS, which may hinder testing a little.
It is a safe bet however, that from the instant Beta 3 hit the Internet teams of geeks were sifting through it like they were panning for gold, just to see if Apple has let slip any more surprises.
