The Palm Touchstone is the fancy new wireless charger that will be powering up the Palm Pre. Or is it? A video demonstration of the Touchstone suggests that Palm has bigger plans.
The Palm Touchstone is the impressive wireless charging station that Palm is offering as an optional add-on for the Palm Pre smartphone. The charger uses electromagnetic induction to top up the Pre’s battery via a special backplate that replaces the battery cover.
But it could be so much more. Over at PreThinking, they have uncovered a video demo in which a Palm rep shows off the Touchstone. He then goes on to say that ‘Touchstone’ isn’t just the name of the fancy new charger, “Touchstone is the name of the entire line of products.”
So, what does this mean? The Pre is definitely called the Pre (or else Palm has been pouring away a lot of promotional budget) so could ‘Palm Touchstone’ be a range of Pre accessories? PreThinking reckons this will include a wireless dock for synching the Pre with a PC, but we already know that the Pre doesn’t require a ‘base’ PC and will sync contacts to the Cloud via 3G. So what else is in the works?
Its a puzzler, but if Palm want a Touchstone wishlist we would start with wireless speakers, some kind of local backup unit (along the lines of Apple’s Time Machine) and a device to connect the Pre to a TV or set-top box for easy movie viewing and recording.
