Nikon D5000 DSLR unveiled

UPDATE: We’ve got a Nikon D5000 gallery full of all the official photos. Check it out!

The Nikon D5000 DSLR’s just been unveiled by Nikon, and it squeezes HD video into an entry level DSLR just like the Canon EOS 500D. Read on for specs, price and pics aplenty!

The Nikon D5000 isn’t the Nikon D400 DSLR we were secretly hoping for, but it’s a pleasant surprise nonetheless, combining the Nikon D90‘s HD movie capability, a 12.3MP sensor and ISO up to 6400, plus that 2.7 inch swivel screen we saw in spy shots earlier this month. All those features should make lining up fantastic shots, whatever the angle or lighting conditions, even easier with the Nikon D5000.

There’s also HDMI output to get pictures and video onto a big screen TV, 720/24p HD video recording, a 4fps burst rate for stills and 19 scene modes inside the Nikon D5000, as well as four types of auto focus.

The most attractive feature of the Nikon D5000 though? The price. It debuts at £719.99 for the body only, or £799.99 with a 18-55 VR lens kit.

Compared to the similarly specced Canon EOS 500D (£869 without a lens), that’s a scoop, and hopefully the start of an entry level DSLR price war. You’ll be able to snap the Nikon D5000 DSLR up from the beginning of next month.

Out May 1 | From £719.99 | Nikon
