A new iPhone is on the way, that much is becoming clear. There have been too many rumours, leaks and reported Apple deals going on for fanboys to be completely off track in the speculation game.
But what will make the new iPhone so special? We’ve dusted off our deerstalker to do a bit of detective work and bring you all the rumours and alleged specs in one place. Read on for all the info.
The rumours of a new iPhone started swirling shortly after iPhone OS 3.0 was unveiled last month. So many of the new features, from Spotlight to improved iPhone camera apps suggested a hardware upgrade was coming.
So, what will we see? Inside sources chimed in saying a video camera was coming – a major omission from the current iPhone. Video editing features supposedly hide inside iPhone OS 3.0 too, backing this theory up. Market sources say that a 3.2 megapixel camera is coming too, improving on the current 2MP sensor, and clues in iPhone OS 3.0 also point to an FM transmitter.
Storage is likely to be bumped up in a new iPhone too. A 32GB version to match the iPod touch seems sensible: analysts predicted that the “biggest iPhone yet” would be coming soon, and a report from the Far East told us Apple has scooped up 100 million flash memory chips to stick in the new iPhone, seemingly backing up that Nostradamus grade navel-gazing.
That’s not all though. We’ve heard a few outlandish claims about the new iPhone since then too. One Korean whisper suggested LG was manufacturing OLED screens for the new iPhone, while several Apple patents have raised the possibility of a GPS feature that will call police automatically if the new iPhone is stolen, as well as built-in biometric security. A bit far fetched, but we’ve got our fingers crossed.
And as for a release date? One AT&T source says we’ll see a June unveiling for the new iPhone, which sounds along the right lines to us. Apple’s WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) takes place in June. We’re expecting to see Snow Leopard there, but the invitation features an image of an iPhone, and it was where the iPhone 3G was revealed last year.
If we’re going to see the new iPhone before Autumn, WWDC is where it’ll go down. Let’s just hope Apple stuffs in everything you voted for in our poll when the new iPhone finally shows up.
