Remember last week’s revelations that the upcoming SlingPlayer for iPhone app would only work with newer Slingbox models like the Slingbox SOLO and Slingbox PRO? Well, Sling Media has decided to make it easier for owners of older models to upgrade by offering them a £25 discount.

So, anyone who currently owns a Slingbox can bag themselves a Slingbox SOLO for £86.90 or a Sling PRO for £144.99, allowing them to use what Sling Media describes as “next generation software and services”.

Many people would doubtless have preferred the company to make the new software and services compatible with the older Slingbox models, or at least offer a little bit more off the price of the new ones. The US offer gives Slingbox owners $50 off, which equates to £34.

To qualify for the discount, which is only available when you buy from Amazon.co.uk, you’ll need to register your Slingbox serial number at the Sling Media upgrade site (which is down at the time of writing).

In the UK, the only boxes we’re told would now work with the iPhone would be the Solo and the Pro…..

The Solo doesn’t have a built-in Freeview tuner….even the basic classic has this…so this almost seems like an expensive downgrade!

The Pro is already getting on a bit….how much longer would sling support this model?!….
In anycase it will connect to HD equipment, but will still downscale the picture to standard def before it streams it….so no big upgrade there.

The only box which would be a real upgrade (provided your internet connection can handle the strain) would be the Pro-HD which will also stream HD video….Great….so I’ll bite the bullet and buy that then…..oh I Can’t…it’s not available in the UK!!

maybe I can still get 25 quid off a Pro-HD in the far future if and when Sling launch it in the UK :-)

Meh, the PSP/PS3/PlayTV combo does a much slicker job of /scheduling/recording/viewing TV anywhere.

So the Sling (Echostar) suits think they can rip-off their US customers by forcing them to buy unnecessary kit, and they must think Brits are even bigger mugs who will cough-up even more.

    One word: BOYCOTT!
