Ubisoft has put the Assassin’s Creed 2 hype machine into gear and is gently easing the throttle by launching a brand new website. A short video drops plenty of hints and clues pertaining to the setting and features of Assassin’s Creed 2; the inclusion of Davinci-esque sketches has led many to believe the sequel will be set in Renaissance Italy, probably Venice.

That puts former Assassin’s Creed protagonist Altair out of the runnings by a couple of centuries. But it looks like the shadowy Abstergo Industries and Knights Templar are still behind the scenes with their ANIMUS machine, with the teaser site prominently displaying the word ‘ANIMUS’ as its title.

Other info to be gleaned from the teaser site is that there may be some kind of gliding mechanic to help the new Assassin’s Creed star get around. It is also rumoured that there will swimming too, which would be kind of essential if it is indeed set in Venice.

The original Assassin’s Creed was repetitive, protracted and a little too forgiving in the combat, falling victim to the vast amounts of hype surrounding it. But it was also utterly gorgeous to look at and packed with an intriguing, multi-layered narrative that has neatly paved the way to the sequel, so if Ubisoft can fix some of the original’s shortcomings and deliver another intriguing story, it could turn out to be something very special indeed.

I would imagine it’ll feature more than one city, like the original – so perhaps Venice, Florence and Rome? Whatever, Renaissance Italy seems like the perfect place to set a game about assassination and conspiracy…

Really nice teaser site – they aren’t giving anything away at all! Has anyone else played with the bit that uses your webcam? Any ideas on what that might be for? It doesn’t seem to do anything apart from display the feed from your own webcam?
